Nicholas Crutcher

Founder and CEO of Crutcher Cornerstone Community Development Corporation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

Cornerstone Movement is a trade name that encompasses many different programs, initiatives, and partnerships in multiple communities under Crutcher Cornerstone Community Development Corporation.

Nicholas is a civil rights activist and a minister at New Direction Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, CO.

Early life that formed the mindset for Cornerstone

Nicholas was born on November 29th, 1981 in Peoria, Illinois. Nicholas never knew his father. His father was a member of a gang and died in the streets.

His mother, Martha Louise Thomas, was incarcerated for prostitution and petty crimes and institutionalized for mental illness for most for Nicholas’ early life. She died in 2016 from a drug overdose.

Nicholas lived in many foster homes until he was adopted by Elijah and Emma J. Crutcher. This provided a foundation of love and hope.

Nicholas was jumped into his father’s gang at an early age and became a product of the streets.

At the age of 15, Nicholas knew he had to escape the gang and street environment. Two key mentors, Pastor Thurston Hunt and Rev. Leon Gatlin gave him the chance to escape.

Nicholas had studied history and the teachings of masters such as Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X. The TV mini series “Roots” also had an influence.

In the summer of 1996, Nicholas was given the chance to teach the youth during a summer camp held at Grace Missionary Baptist Church. This was the start of the “Movement” which later became Cornerstone Movement.

Cornerstone to date

Since that first summer camp, Nicholas has followed a calling that had included partnerships in Wisconsin, Colorado, Nevada, Washington D.C., California, and Georgia.

He has focused on creating summer camps and after-school programs where the need was clear for 25 years. He has impacted the lives of over 25,000 youth equipping them with leadership skills to empower them to be productive citizens.

Many graduates have gone on to become law-enforcement personnel, teachers, politicians, professional athletes, college graduates and great parents. Cornerstone has also launched a program in Ghana. Out of these experiences the MOVEMENT was born.

Prior to two years ago, Nicholas always teamed with a local nonprofit to create each local program. In 2018, he formed Crutcher Cornerstone Community Development Corporation to create a platform to empower each community to develop the programs needed to serve families and the youth.

We are in the process of building the tools and resources that will empower more leaders across the country to meet the needs of youth who are being left behind.

The Platform/system

Nicholas has demonstrated an ability to engage and uplift families and children who can benefit from his caring approach. He has demonstrated this ability in many communities. He empowers them through his teachings and support, but he expects individuals to take responsibility for their own success.

In most cases, Nicholas has teamed with other organizations who managed any grants. He loves working in the trenches helping people. But, he has limited capacity. He can only serve so many directly. He has sacrificed personally in order to serve.

To serve the many who need help to achieve their full potential, he now realizes that he must build a platform to empower others to carry on this work. While we continue to serve members in our existing programs, we are expanding to build a platform, or system, to empower other leaders in every community to manage the task of helping to build better communities and address the many challenges being faced by most people, especially in lower-income families and in families of color.

Racism and poverty have yet to be adequately addressed. We strive to help each community uplift their members and overcome these obstacles.
